A woman's body needs to start recovering right after a workout: ideally within 30–45 minutes, whereas for men a window of up to three hours is enough. This helps minimize muscle catabolism driven by progesterone and supports better recovery of strength and endurance.[1]

A combination of protein and carbohydrates in your post-workout meal is recommended regardless of gender: protein helps rebuild muscle fibers, while carbohydrates replenish glycogen stores. For example, yogurt with fruit, chocolate milk, or a turkey sandwich on whole-grain bread.[2] [3]

  1. Protein: about 20–25 g (for example, a serving of yogurt, low-fat milk, or a portion of chicken or fish).
  2. Carbohydrates: simple and complex (fruit, whole-grain bread, or grains).
  3. Hydration: water or drinks with electrolytes, especially if the workout was intense.

If you ignore this narrow window and fail to replenish energy and amino acids in time, a woman may face chronic fatigue, muscle soreness, and reduced performance in future workouts.[1]
